Monaco: The Princess joins an unlikely team of animal rights activists and the circus world to save Baby and Nepal
The elephants, who have contracted the deadly tuberculosis disease, have already received support from another high profile celebrity – Brigitte Bardot. According to a report in local newspaper Nice Matin, Princess Stephanie said: "I feel I must have been an elephant in a former life. I love the sensitivity and peaceful force of these creatures."

The princess is well known for her involvement in the circus world and Thursday 17th January marks the launch of the 37th International Circus Festival of Monte Carlo - perfect timing for stricken elephants Baby and Nepal.
Like Bardot, Princess Stephanie wrote to Hollande pleading for further tests and recommending experts to conduct them. She also condemned the zoo's “quick reaction” on the basis of a vet that “had never even dealt with elephants before”.
"All elephants are more or less carriers of this form of tuberculosis, one which is not contagious to humans," claimed the princess.
Several solutions were put forward including treatment and free shelter for the animals within the circus world of Monaco.

Circus Museum unveils a huge mural

"The Greatest Show on Earth" by William Woodward.
By Susan Rife
from: Sarasota Herald-Tribune
Thursday, January 17, 2013
For more than 20 years, a huge mural capturing the essence of circus life in the 1970s and '80s graced the lobby of Feld Entertainment, owners of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, in Vienna, Va.
But only employees and visitors to the building saw the 22-by-42-foot mural, painted in 1989 by William Woodward.
Today, that changes with the unveiling of "The Greatest Show on Earth" in its new home — the entryway to the Tibbals Learning Center in the Circus Museum at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. The mural goes on display to the public Jan. 19.
The mural depicts a number of famous circus personages, from animal trainer Gunther Gebel-Williams and clown Lou Jacobs to aerialist Dolly Jacobs and alligator wrestler Tahar Douis. Elephants, tigers, prancing horses and a unicorn share space with clowns, jugglers and trapeze artists.
There's even a self-portrait of the artist himself.
The mural took nearly two years to plan and execute, painted on 968 square feet of canvas. Its removal from Feld Entertainment's headquarters took more than 360 hours.
Moving the mural came about when Feld Entertainment sold its building in Vienna in order to relocate to Ellenton.

"I thought, we're going to have to take the thing down and get it restored," said Kenneth Feld. "I'm thinking, where would be a dramatic place for it? I figured we're down in the Sarasota area and to have a permanent home in the Sarasota museum would be the absolute best thing."
A huge blank wall in the Tibbals Center was the answer.
"When I walked into the Circus Museum, there was a white wall under a trapeze and I said, 'You know, this would be the perfect spot,'" said Feld, now a member of the Ringling Museum's board of directors, "I thought, wow, this would be a mind-blowing, larger than life experience when people are walking into the museum."

New Shanghai Circus Returns to the MACC

Posted by Picasa
On Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 21 and 22, the New Shanghai Circus will return to Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater.
from: The Maui Weekly
January 17, 2013
What do a wheelbarrow, the compass, paper, silk cloth, porcelain and acrobatics have in common? They were all created in China and they're all featured in the Shanghai Circus. On Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 21 and 22, will return to Maui Arts & Cultural Center to perform three beautifully orchestrated shows in the Castle Theater.

During the Han Dynasty two millennia ago, Chinese farmers and craftsmen, having relatively little to do over the long winter, spent their time improving their positions on the social ladder by becoming acrobats.

They practiced the art form with just about anything they could find around their homes--even their own bodies.
Building on these traditional performances, artists of today's New Shanghai Circus add layers of complexity and daring feats with new techniques and spectacular stunts.

The shows begin at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Monday, and at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Adult tickets are $12, $22 and $28, and $11, $12 and $14 for kids 12 years and under, plus applicable fees.

EXCLUSIVE: Circus Gypsy Takes PIPPIN to New Heights at A.R.T.
from: broadwayworld.com

There's an interesting irony that's informing The American Repertory Theater's daring revival of PIPPIN currently in previews at the Loeb Drama Center in Cambridge, Mass. According to circus choreographer Gypsy Snider, the co-founder of Les 7 doigts de la main enlisted by A.R.T. artistic director Diane Paulus to incorporate circus acrobatics into her bold new staging of the iconic 1970s pop musical, it is the very "magic" that Pippin seeks in his quest to become extraordinary that Snider sometimes dreams of escaping.
"The choice Pippin has to make is whether or not to run away with the circus," she says. "For me, sometimes I would like to run away from the circus."
Born and raised in her parents' San Francisco-based Pickle Family Circus, Snider has been in the ring since the age of four. Her life has been one death-defying act after another. But it wasn't until a few years ago when she faced her greatest nemesis - stage 3.5 colon cancer - that she realized her happiness didn't depend upon the thrills and chills of her unusual career.
"Why do we all search for lives better than what we are?" she ponders. "Why do we have to climb Mt. Everest or jump out of an airplane for adventure? For me, why was 'ordinary' not enough? But cancer changed all that. I forgot the circus and just focused on healing and being with my family. In that stage of total illness I realized that 'extraordinary' is what's inside of us."
PIPPIN marks Snider's full-scale return to work since her recovery. As she creates high-flying circus feats to emphasize the young Pippin's harrowing journey in search of personal fulfillment, she draws upon her own unique life-and-death experiences to achieve the right balance between physical daring and emotional expression.

"The acrobatics are not incorporated as skills but as a way to seduce Pippin to a life less ordinary," Snider explains. "The pull is to 'join us,' to push Pippin further and further on his quest. But when he meets Catherine (a widow with a young son), and she asks, 'Can you help me?' he faces an existential crisis. Will he be enticed to go out in a literal blaze of glory or give up everything to care for others who need him? In the end maybe real life just isn't all that thrilling. And maybe that's okay."

Cirque du soleil announces 400 layoffs, most at its Montreal headquarters
from:  washingtonpost.com
By Associated Press
Jan 16, 2013
MONTREAL — The world-renowned Cirque du soleil circus troupe is laying off 400 people — most of them at its Montreal headquarters.
A company spokeswoman announced the layoffs on Wednesday after Cirque executives met with employees in Montreal.
Increased production costs and expenses are being blamed for the layoffs, which will begin by the end of the month.
The Cirque employs about 5,000 people worldwide, including 2,000 in Montreal.
It still has 19 productions being presented worldwide and is currently working on a new show that will open in May in Las Vegas.
Another touring production that will open in the spring of 2014 in Montreal is also in the works.
But four shows besides the 19 that are still on stage have closed recently.

Big Apple Circus Comes to Alpharetta
The Big Apple Circus will perform under a big tent at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park from February 1-18, 2013.
Upon entering this fabulous event, spectators will experience the nostalgic thrills of bygone Big Tops and get a first–hand view of beauties, daredevils, and clowns from another era! The audience will be amazed as they watch mid-air flips and catches of a man on the trapeze, as a captivating contortionist shows off her flexibility that is as impressive as her steadfast poise and as a jaw-dropping juggling tango team performs to passionate rhythms. And it’s all led by an affable Ringmaster and the great Big Apple Circus Band.
“This is the first time The Big Apple Circus has visited Alpharetta and we think it will be an exciting and fun experience for all who attend.  This type of attraction fits in great with our energetic and active city,” says Janet Rodgers, President and CEO of the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau. “After the show, we encourage all visitors to make plans to stay the weekend in Alpharetta and explore all of the many happenings going on in the city.”
