SUMMER CIRCUS

You do not need to run away to join the circus

IT IS a circus out there, quite literally, for a growing number of Singaporeans who are turning to trapeze acrobatics, juggling and stiltwalking as a hobby and a way to keep fit.

In the past five years, numbers have grown from less than 40 to more than 300 now, according to practitioners. At Circus Swingapore, a school for the aerial arts, more students are taking classes to shape up, said executive creative director Lim Sing Yuen.

Every week, its classes, now fully booked, are attended by 210 students, from children as young as four to adults, learning acrobatics on a static trapeze, a hoop suspended in mid-air or silk bands draped from a rig.

Said Connie Lee, an insurance broker in her late 30s and an aerial arts student for the past two years: “Not many people know how to do this and it’s really a full-body workout – that’s why I like it.”

Workshops cost around S$200 (RM500) for eight weeks. Bruises come easy when moves go wrong, but Lee keeps coming back.

“It requires courage to get on the trapeze and perserverance to achieve the poses, but once you get it, it’s quite addictive,” she said.

On the ground, poi spinning, which involves a special prop that makes patterns, and contact juggling are growing more popular here. The Bornfire Community Circus hobby group, consisting of jugglers and poi spinners, meets up every week at Kallang Community Club to practise.

It has about 20 regulars, but up to 10 new faces come down every week to try, said fresh graduate Choo Zheng Hao, 24, who has been with the group for more than two years.

Retiree Anthony Lim, 61, attended a juggling workshop after reading about the group online.

“It feels good to achieve something you thought you couldn’t,” said Lim, who hopes to continue to learn juggling at home through lessons on YouTube.

Even the young are getting on board, through lessons in schools and children’s homes.

“Juggling, for example, teaches you perseverance and confidence,” said Jay Che, founder of Circus In Motion, which conducted lessons in poi, stiltwalking and diablo, a form of juggling in which a spool is spun on a string, for around 25 schools and youth organisations last year. — The Straits Times / Asia News Network

The Oakland County Fair, which dates back to the days of the Civil War, is gearing up for 11 days of fun beginning on Independence Day.
This year is the first time the fair has ever begun on a holiday, and organizers say they are quite excited about the possibilities.
LC Scramlin, general manager of the Oakland County Fair, has worked at the fair nearly his whole life, but has been on the fair board or worked as manager for 26 years. He said he is thrilled about some of the new events coming to this year’s festivities.
“We’re going to have fireworks on the Fourth (of July), that evening,” Scramlin said. “If you want to come out in the daytime and ride the midway, the carnival will start at 1 p.m. and for just $10, you can ride all the rides from 1 to 5. It is $15 to ride all day.”
An old favorite, the off-road demolition derby, is back on July 5 after being taken off the schedule for a few years. The main goal, officials said, is to beat up the other vehicles until they are unable to run.
Oakland County Parks, along with Detroit’s Country 99.5 WYCD-FM radio, is hosting a special free concert called “Nashville in the Neighborhood” on July 8 at Springfield Oaks County Park. Genisys Credit Union is sponsoring the free concert from 7 to 9 p.m. in the grandstand arena. Gates open at 6 p.m. to first-come, first-served general seating.
Scramlin said at 7 p.m. July 9 and 10, the fair will host their Super Kicker Rodeo, and Monster Trucks will be featured at 7 p.m. July 13. Both events are fan favorites.

Following four weeks of heats and an electrifying final show, the winner of the UK's first ever circus competition was announced on Saturday night. Hand to hand balancing maestros Louis and Beren has been crowned the best act in the land in a competition created by Underbelly Productions, the production arm of Underbelly Limited and Circus Space, the National Centre for Circus Arts.

Attracting nearly 100 entries, Circus Maximus has embraced a wide range of circus skills, which has reflected the wealth, and range of talent that the UK has to offer. During the heats five acts were selected by a combination of audience vote and an expert panel of judges to take part in the stunning finals.

These comprised the dizzying skills of Sylvia Pavone whose spins and twists with hula hoops created a series of sparkling images, Ben Brown who pulled and squeezed into muscular contortions onaerial hoop, the swinging, hanging and leaping talents of Fran and Lucie on Cloud Swing and Tom Ball whose strength and poise on static trapeze stole the audience's collective breath away.

CIRCUS FLORA

Storm intrudes on Circus Flora's delightful moon trip

Sun, 06.02.13
The theme of this year's Circus Flora is "A Trip to the Moon," an homage to the 1902 fantasy film of the same name, but on Friday night there was no moon to be seen in the angry skies above the big red tent in Grand Center. Inside, a fanciful replica of the moon smiled over the circus ring. The opening night crowd was enjoying itself mightily, focused on entertainment, not the weather.
As the first half of the program came to a rousing close, with Janine Del'Arte's band blaring out oom-pahs, the audience of more than 1,000 rose to give an enthusiastic standing ovation to the Flying Wallendas, who had mixed a bicycle, a lawn chair and a top-hat sized hunk of "moon cheese" into the high wire act that is one of the most cherished perennials of this circus. Narrator Cecil MacKinnon, glittering in a star-streaked cloak and wizard's hat, announced it was time for a 15-minute intermission.

St. Louis Arches
Then sirens sounded, and she immediately changed the announcement: a tornado warning was in effect, and the audience was to make an "orderly exit" out of the tent and walk "calmly" westward across Grand Blvd. to a shelter in the basement of Corcoran Veterans Hospital at Grand and Delmar.
In recent times, for good reason, those of us who live in the middle of the country have become more alert to the dangers of tornadoes, and after some momentary milling, and a few more reassuring but firm words from MacKinnon, the crowd began filing out of the tent and headed through a light drizzle toward the sanctuary of the large hospital.

Several tornadoes were reported in the area, but only heavy thunderstorms swept across Grand Center. Meanwhile, the audience, or at least most of it, was sheltered inside the hospital, and most of the circus people were tending to their animals in the big tent or in their trailers. Johnny Peers and his dozen or more dogs, the Muttville Comix, found shelter in the Green Room of Powell Hall, where the St. Louis Symphony was performing the music of the long-defunct rock group Queen.

By the time the storm had cleared the area, it was well after 9 o'clock, too late to start again, particularly given the large number of children in the audience, said executive director Joel Emery. "By the time we could have reassembled audience and performers," he said, "it would have been after 10 o'clock, and I don't think anyone wanted that."
