New York---If you could acquire any skill that would be guaranteed to impress children and adults alike, that would make you a hit at parties, that would wow the ladies—and the men for that matter—what would it be?
Making lots of money would be a good place to start. But that’s not what I’m talking about. I mean a physical skill, a talent that suggests coordination and makes people more intrigued about you; that in some small, subliminal way suggests there’s sparkle to your personality—a deep, subterranean reservoir of drive and passion that can just be glimpsed behind your smooth, debonair, unemotive exterior.
I’m talking about juggling, of course. Who wouldn’t want to know how to juggle? I’m not suggesting doing it for a living. But simply when the action lags at a business meeting or a cocktail party, and you spy off in the corner, say, several rubber balls, a bowling pin or two, and maybe one of those rubber chickens you can buy at novelty shops—what any of these objects would be doing in a Midtown office or someone’s home, for that matter, I have no idea—being able to pick them up and prove yourself capable of keeping all of them aloft at the same time, and then catching them before they drop to the floor.
It was something like that desire to learn a bold new trick that found me on a recent afternoon at Dube Juggling, a store on lower Broadway that has answers to all your juggling needs. These include juggling balls, of course, as well as juggling clubs, knives, bean bags, cigar boxes, hats, scarves, rings, fire torches, unicycles and rola bola boards. Indeed, the only thing you have to supply yourself might be the stilted banter that professional jugglers seem to feel essential to their craft.
I happened to be there in the august company of Paul Binder, the founder and onetime ringmaster of the Big Apple Circus and the author of a new memoir, “Never Quote the Weather to a Sea Lion,” about his life in the circus.
Mr. Binder claimed he’d have me juggling in no time. “I think I can give him a basic pattern in half an hour to 45 minutes,” he boasted.
I told him I already knew how to juggle two balls. He was unimpressed. “Three is juggling,” he sniffed. “Two isn’t. One more object than hands becomes juggling.”

Tickets to Zoppe' Circus Going Fast
85 percent of the tickets are already sold out.

Editor's Note: This article was written by Andrew Lenoir and posted by Erica Jackson.
The circus is coming to Westhampton this week, with the return of Zoppe Italian Family Circus.
The Zoppe Family has been in the circus business since 1842, when Napoline Zoppe a street performing clown fell in love with a ballerina while in Budapest and the two began a family and performance troupe together.  A one-ring circus, the current show follows a single story about a bumbling clown named Nino as he moves through a scene scape of acrobatic, equestrian and animal acts.
The circus will have five performances, beginning this Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. Friday and Saturday will also have 7 p.m. shows. There is also a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday and Sunday.
This is the third time the Zoppe Family Circus has performed in Westhampton, and excitement runs high. According to Jodi Giambrone Manager of Public Relations at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, 85 percent of the tickets are already sold out, and for good reason.
“It’s incredible, it’s something different than we’ve ever decided to do,” She said, “It has an old world charm. It’s very magical.”
Part of what sets the show apart is its smaller size and also the care taken for the performers— including the animals. There are no lions or tigers, only chickens, dogs and horses, but every one of them is a rescue.
Tickets are $54 for adults, and $29 for children twelve and under.
Tickets can be purchased online at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center website: http://whbpac.org/

Circus Oz to amaze the bush

Circus Oz is on the road to Arnhem Land, where it will perform at remote communities.
From:  ntnews.com.au
July 25th, 2013
FROM the razzle and dazzle of Broadway to the rugged Territory bush, Circus Oz knows no bounds when it comes to taking the show on the road.
A 40-foot semi-trailer full of clowns, acrobats, musicians and the "world's greatest magician" will roll into remote communities of Arnhem Land from Monday.
The company's latest free community show Cranked Up will be held in Gunbalanya, Maningrida, Ramingining, Gapuwiyak, Yirrkala and Gulkula at the Garma Festival.
The "rock-n-roll, animal-free circus" for adults and children will feature two hours of breathtaking agility, death-defying stunts, acrobatic performances, irreverent comedy and a red-hot live band.
Circus Oz Artistic Associate Josh Bond said the company was "all-inclusive".
"It's about taking works of scale to remote communities and giving equal access to the arts," Mr Bond said.
"For those who were in Times Square (New York) earlier on this year, they can expect to see a very similar show in Arnhem Land."
The show will be performed under the stars in an outdoor rig.
Circus Oz was born in Melbourne, in 1978.
Since 1985, Circus Oz has been doing gigs and workshops in remote communities - performing in local halls or outdoor rigs and teaching classes to local kids.
Circus Oz Artistic Director Mike Finch said: "Twenty years ago we toured Arnhem Land in a vintage DC3 aeroplane. The connection with the amazing local culture while performing outdoor circus shows in the communities had a profound impact on Circus Oz.
"We're honoured to be going back to one of Australia's most amazing regions."
Mr Bond was raised on Elcho Island and said the experience had a "profound affect" on him.
"I remember when Circus Oz came through Elcho back in the 80s, they flew in on a DC3 aircraft," he said. "In order to dream big you need to see what big looks like."

CIRCUS STARLIGHT is back at L’Eree aerodrome.
The first show was yesterday, for invited guests only, but it is now open to the public every day except Mondays until Sunday 11 August.
Acts include strongman, martial arts, oriental dancing, comedy and clowning, feathered-friends and canine capers.
Organiser Gill Valler, who also owns much of the equipment, said everyone had been looking forward to this year’s event. ‘We first came over in 1989 and have been back virtually every year. I think we have only missed about three.’
Miss Valler said the circus had a few new acts this year including Ramajam the clown’s tower of glasses and a performance called Defying Gravity, with Jason O’Shea, who has previously performed on Strictly Come Dancing Live.

US circus boasts African-American roots, global cast

from: menfn.com
MENAFN - AFP -
24/07/2013
(MENAFN - AFP) Growing up in Trinidad and Tobago, Makeba Gabriel imagined living a life of Carnival limbo dancing. Running away with the circus never crossed her mind.
"That was my dream, to be a dancer," said the 31-year-old star of the UniverSoul circus who thinks nothing of bending over backwards to crawl under five rows of open flames 10 inches (25 centimeters) off the ground.
"It wasn't to be with a circus. But it just so happens that I've been with the circus for seven years, and it is a pleasure. It's really fun and enjoyable," she said.
UniverSoul is among dozens of circuses that criss-cross the United States every summer, sustaining a form of live entertainment that dates back to the late 18th century.
"If you live anywhere in the United States within 30 or 40 miles of any primary or secondary market, you will find a circus," circus historian Rodney Huey told AFP.
The grandest and most historic is the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, the self-styled "greatest show on Earth," while the Canadian-based Cirque de Soleil enjoys a strong following.
UniverSoul is a smaller one-ring affair, but its heritage makes it unique.
Founded in 1994 by pioneering rap concert producer Cedric Walker, whose hip-hop tours helped to make Run-D.M.C. and Salt-n-Pepa household names, it is the only modern circus with African-American roots.

Circus Train, Big Top Show in Essex
From: newtimes.com
By Dina Cashman
July 23, 2013
Danbury,CT---Step right up this weekend and enjoy a trip to the circus aboard a vintage train, as the Valley Railroad's Circus Train and Big Top Show returns to Essex for its third year.

A ringmaster will welcome visitors aboard for an authentic circus train ride from a required off-site parking lot at a nearby business, Lee Co., to the Essex Steam Train grounds.

Once there, spectators can enjoy a thrill-packed acrobat show under the Big Top Tent and laugh along to a "Punch and Judy" puppet show.

Visitors can also stroll through a circus midway that features amusement rides, clowns, a petting zoo, circus food and live entertainment.

The Valley Railroad Co. president Bob Bell, who is ringmaster, said the three-passenger-car diesel locomotive will include at its rear six historic circus wagons mounted on two flatbed cars, along with a circus box car and caboose.
Bell said that Chuck Reid of Imperial Shows rescued the historic circus carriages from abandoned fields and had them refurbished.
Aboard the train, ringmaster Bell and the clowns -- volunteers from the Essex Steam Train -- will entertain passengers during the roughly 15-minute trip to the Big Top at the Essex station grounds.

Bell said his ringmaster duties enable him to enjoy watching the children's reactions.
"I love to see the kids' eyes light up when they interact with the clowns," Bell said. "I have a show that turns the whole crowd into clowns."

Nicole Anllo, event marketing coordinator, said the old-fashioned circus train ride gives visitors a glimpse of days gone by.

"People get to see what circus trains were like 100 years ago and travel from place to place. A circus never stayed in one place. Nowadays they travel by truck, by plane, by boat, but not so much by train," she said.

"So that's what kind of makes it unique. It has that old, unique feel and the modern elements of the circus that people want to see."

The Lee Co., 55 Bokum Road, Essex. Train departs every 30 minutes 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., returning 9:45 a.m.-5 p.m. $20; age 2, under free. 860-767-0103, www.essexsteamtrain.com.
