The last time I was in NYC and taking cousins from Ireland on a tour around the city I was happy to see several floss vendors, just like your photo, at various tourist spots.
Why didn't I think of that when I was a teenager? The vendors were doing very good biz at $3.
Mike a count store is also know as a flat store. In other words it's gambling. You know the old story you can't beat a man at his own game!

ReplyDeleteDick, when I was a teenager in NYC I had a job clowning at Steeplechase Park in Coney Island, not the original steeplechase for the record.
Down the street was a store-front game and it had a big sign PEDRO'S BUST A BALLOON. All summer long I kept looking for Pedro, and there was no Pedro. I found out that PEDRO'S was owned by the same man who leased Steeplechase Park, where I worked and he was a very fine Jewish gentleman by the name of Mr. Kaufman. I asked him, remember I was 17, "Who is Pedro?" He said, "The majority of the customers are from Puerto Rico and Pedro is a name they are comfortable with. If I name it KAUFMAN THE JEW then I would have no customers."
He was one of my favorite bosses and one of the most brillant.
He asked me to stay late one night, they were short a cashier on the JET STAR, the tickets were $1. and I worked the slow window, the regular cashier worked the fast window. In a few hours the slow window did over $600, remember it was the slow window.
