FLINT, Michigan — Local families let out gasps as they watched a tiger jump through a flaming hoop Sunday during the annual Shrine Circus in Flint, and sat with their eyes glued to acrobats flipping and twirling on trapezes that swung through the air.
For some families, visiting the circus was a new experience.
Clio residents Atalee and Malea Nakamura, both 7, were at the circus for the first time with their dad.
"My favorite part was riding the elephant," Malea said. "It was fun, and not scary."
During intermission, families filled the center of the ring, as children were able to participate in elephant rides and pony rides, and could take pictures with various circus performers.
"It's been amazing, they're really enjoying it," said their father, Myles Nakamura.
For other families, visiting the circus has become a tradition.
Genesee Township residents Tom and Mary LaLonde brought their son Blake, 6, to the circus Sunday, and they all had been looking forward to the occassion.
"We usually come every year," Tom LaLonde said. "It's a really good time, he enjoys all the animals."
