Cirque du Soleil’s Ovo is a New Kind of Bug Story

March may seem a shade early for an insect invasion — even for Houston. But don't call your friendly neighborhood exterminator. The larger-than-life insects in Ovo, the latest touring spectacle from Cirque du Soleil, are out to entertain and amaze.
Opening Thursday in Cirque's trademark blue-and-gold big top at Sam Houston Race Park, Ovo depicts a teeming insect ecosystem where ants, butterflies, crickets, spiders, scarabs and other creatures work, eat, play, flutter, crawl, fight and look for love in a nonstop riot of energy and movement. A new-bug-in-town arrives bringing a mysterious giant egg, which baffles the residents, and the stranger further complicates life in Bugtown by falling for a comely ladybug. (Ovo is Portuguese for egg.)
As you'd expect of a show with an all-insect cast, Ovo has generated lots of buzz since its 2009 premiere in Montreal. Some have called it Cirque's most jaw-dropping touring production yet, the best show the company has ever put on the road.
Reviewing the 2009 premiere, Variety saw Ovo as proof that Cirque du Soleil is not resting on its laurels, as the show "branches out in several fairly bold directions, a sign of an organization willing to challenge the status quo." The review noted that an increased emphasis on choreography makes Ovo "move with an artistic totality and seamless fluidity" that some past Cirque touring shows have lacked.
That was the idea when Cirque Artistic Guides Guy Laliberte and Gilles Ste-Croix (basically, the chiefs of the whole operation) sought out internationally acclaimed choreographer Deborah Colker to direct, choreograph and write Ovo. To mark the company's 25th anniversary in 2009, they wanted Cirque's 25th production to maintain trademark ingredients while refreshing the formula.read more at:http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/nri/art-culture/Cirque-du-Soleils-Ovo-is-a-New-Kind-of-Bug-Story/articleshow/7752405.cms
