FROM BACK IN THE DAY---

1914-1918: Zoo animals supporting the war effort
“With many of Sheffield horses conscripted by the military he had an increasingly difficult time to match supply with demand. Lizzie the Elephant was brought in as a solution to this problem. Drafted in from Sedgwick’s Menagerie, the elephant became a familiar sight carrying goods around the city. She inspired other Sheffield firms and a company used camels also from Sedgwick’s Menagerie in place of their own horses.”

  1. This is something I have never heard about. Namely, one of the greatest educators of her time and one of the greatest clowns of his time meeting. This is incredible!
