Gigs at county fairs involve much more than just guitars and amplifiers for Michael Britt of the band Lonestar.

There is the smell of funnel cake and cotton candy, he said, both of which can usually be detected from the stage. At past county fair performances, said Britt, who is originally from Texas but lives in Nashville. Lonestar members have bantered with the crowd about how good the cotton candy smells. On more than one occasion, that resulted in a delivery of the confectionary to the foot of the stage.

Lonestar, well-known for the hit, “I’m Already There,” has performed at many county fairs around the country and will be in Rhinebeck on Thursday to perform at the Dutchess County Fair.

The Circus Firemen have performed around the world and this weekend downtown St. Catharines was their stage.

The Australian duo, who go by the names Angus and Matilda, did five shows during Niagara Buskerfest.

"We've had a great time," Matilda said. "It's been quite busy."

The pair explained to the crowd, between juggling fire and hamming it up with each other, that they only make money from donations.

"It creates a nice relationship between the performance and the audience," Matilda said.

Riley Finn, 8, enjoyed the show — he was part of it. The St. Catharines resident was all smiles as he helped out by holding props and spraying the Circus Firemen with a water gun.

The act was one of more than a dozen to entertain audiences on the streets during the free three-day event.

Cally Rouse and her family attended the street festival Sunday to take in the acts and enjoy the carnival atmosphere.

It was August 19 - the first day of autumn. Or so it seemed in the early hours of Sunday's final-day session at the 111th edition of the Hamburg Fair in Lyme.
Indeed, a whispering breeze and cooler temperatures seemed a sort of meteorological consolation prize after relentless rain melted many of Saturday's prime attendance hours at the beloved event.
"I was actually cold on the way in this morning," said Frett Marsha, who was serving Memphis-style pulled pork sandwiches and coleslaw at the Porky Pete's barbecue kiosk on a stretch of turf connecting the crafts section of the fair with the rides and games zip code. "It's almost like fall, and you can tell people are enjoying that aspect."
Marsha, who works full time for Porky Pete's, an Essex eatery and catering service, was helped behind the counter by his fiance, a schoolteacher named Jessica Forsier. It was the first time to work the Hamburg Fair for each, and they were both relishing the experience.
"We're meeting so many nice people," Forsier said. "It's a fun change to do this. We'd do it again."
Though Saturday's horse-pull event was washed out, a large crowd sat attentively for Sunday's ox-pull competitions.

Havana, Aug 17 (IANS) Acrobats, contortionists, clowns and other circus performers from 16 countries will participate in a circus festival in Havana, organisers said.

The 11th International Summer Festival Circuba 2012 will take place in Havana from Aug 22 to Sep 2, and will stage performances from Brazil, China, Sweden and 13 other countries, reported Xinhua.

The festival's highlight will be the 5th Erdwin Fernandez International Clown Competition scheduled for Aug 23-26.

Circus shows are highly popular and have a rich tradition in Cuba.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- One of the Illinois State Fair's most reliable visitors has returned this year.

Ninety-four-year-old Springfield resident Eileen Jones has visited every year since she was born, except during World War II, when no fairs were held.

The fair welcomed her back this week, when Jones visited with her youngest son and his family.

She recalled fairs past and how she loved the carnival most as a child.

Jones says her aunt would walk her through the barns before they could go to the Happy Hollow carnival.

She says she started to enjoy the exhibits more as she got older, explaining that they become "less boring."

The fair runs through Sunday. Its opening weekend drew 287,000 visitors. That was 5 percent more than last year.

Cole Bros. Circus Moves from Devon to VFMA
The self-proclaimed "world's largest circus under the big top" will move from the Devon Horse Show Grounds to the grounds of Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne this summer.

The Cole Brothers Circus is coming back to the Tredyffrin-Easttown area, but it will set up shop at a new location this summer.

The tented circus will run for two days, Monday and Tuesday Agust 27-28 on the grounds of Valley Forge Military Academy and College. Shows are scheduled each day at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.. Last year, the travelling circus was at the  Devon Horse Show Grounds.

It's not clear why the circus is moving to a new location during its Upper Main Line visit this year. A number of factors play in to where the circus pitches its unique tent (which features no poles that obstruct the audiences view).  During last year's run at Devon, Circus President and CEO John Pugh told Patch that local sponsors and venue schedules are often factors in determining where the circus schedules its shows.

The Devon Horse Show completely overhauled the practice oval since the circus played there last year. The rennovations were paid for with a gift from the Devon Horse Show Foundation.

The Horse Show is also staging its own show just a few weeks later. The horse show uses the same space. The Devon Fall Classic is set for Septermber 13-16 just a little over two weeks after the circus leaves town.

Last year's circus brought thousands of people to the Devon Horse Show grounds as well as a handful of animal rights protestors who have become commonplace fixtures outside many circuses, regardless of the venue.

Hundreds of thousands of people will head to the Dutchess County Fair this week for nationally known musical acts, dozens of rides, carnival games, 4-H competitions and the ever-popular fair foods.
The Dutchess County Fair returns this week for its 167th year, with hopes for clear skies and a renewed focus on agriculture.
“The fair is getting back to its agricultural roots,” said Richard Weckesser, president of the Dutchess County Agricultural Society, which began the fair in the mid-1800s. “We’re going to add more of an agricultural flavor to the fair.”
The plan for the next four to five years entails showcasing more livestock and more agricultural-themed exhibits, he said. One example is this year’s new soybean exhibit, an educational display that follows a soybean on a journey from sprout to factory floor to store shelf.

Fair staffers confirmed that 4-H milkshakes, chocolate-covered apples and deep-fried Oreo cookies would again be available at the fair this year. This year’s fair boasts 45 rides, an entertainment lineup including Lonestar and Chubby Checker, and hundreds of 4-H livestock shows and competitions to be held on “Livestock Hill,” one of the earliest features of the fair.
