Hampton, VA--The slogan used by the Piccadilly Circus seems, at first glance, redundant. "The fun circus," its website proclaims.
Isn't every circus intended to be fun?
Well, sure. What the line suggests, though, is a back-to-basics approach to fun-and-games under the big top. The Sarasota, Fla.-based Piccadilly — which borrows the name of the famous London roundabout — aims to give good value, an all-ages appeal and classic circus thrills.
There's nothing newfangled about the troupe that's ready to give five performances inside the Hampton University Convocation Center on Friday and Saturday.
"It's intimate, a one-ring show," said Zack Garden, general manager of Piccadilly and a third-generation circus man. "You're very close to the action," he said, speaking over the phone from Myrtle Beach, S.C. "It's a very homey feeling. We do a lot of audience participation and eventually you get to come down into the ring and join in on the fun."
Most of the familiar elements of a circus experience are included with the Piccadilly show — just scaled-down somewhat.
Garden said the show travels with about 65 people, including 20 performers. Those include clowns, aerialists, daredevil motorcyclists, a 12-year-old contortionist and a magician who performs tricks with a lively white tiger. A girl goes into a cage. She disappears and the tiger materializes in her place.
"The other day, a fella told me, 'I think I know where the girl went, but where did the tiger come from?'" Garden said. "I told him, 'It's magic.'"

For Garden, the animals in the show are the stars. While he didn't mention elephants, he did say camels, a zebra, horses and monkeys will be part of the fun.
The beasts are part of what makes circus work rewarding, Garden said.
"My passion is working with the animals," he said. "Growing up in the circus business, I was around them all the time ... I love working with the animals and I love seeing the smiles on the kids' faces."
He offered a piece of advice to parents considering a Piccadilly adventure. "Families with kids should show up early," he said. "That way, they'll get a chance to meet some of the animals."

FOR decades the ritual blooming of circus cotton candy each March has been a sure sign of spring for winter-weary New Yorkers.
Until three years ago.
That’s when the nearly billion-dollar renovation of Madison Square Garden dislodged the annual Manhattan run of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, the “Greatest Show on Earth,” temporarily evicting human and animal performers from their subterranean berths.
Although the circus toured arenas in New Jersey and on Long Island, city circus lovers were denied their yearly infusion of hokum, bunkum, hoopla, humbug and ballyhoo at the New York opening — long considered the opening, the Broadway of the circus.
Enter Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the borough that was the birthplace of P. T. Barnum’s circus.
On Wednesday Big Bertha, as circus folk call Ringling, opened its new show there for a 23-performance run that will continue to April 1. The advent of the circus at Barclays “will take our audience to a completely new place,” said Bruce C. Ratner, the arena’s developer, “and will be an important part of our audience mix, since we want all kinds of events for people of many different interests.”

Ringling Bros. Circus brings bullying lesson to life

A school's effort to teach children about overcoming bullies got a boost Wednesday from the circus. It included a heartfelt message from two stars of the show who were victims of bullies.
It’s not often you see a classroom lesson come to life.
The Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus ringmaster was picked up by his assistant, who was not much taller than members of his audience, but the message was not just about physical strength – it was about bullying.

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus to perform at Barclays Center

BROOKLYN - A world-famous circus is set to perform at the Barclays Center.
Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus will perform at the Brooklyn arena tonight through April 1.
A preview of the 'Greatest Show on Earth' was held in DUMBO today, featuring circus performers and dancing elephants.
The People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals (PETA) protested the event, saying that Ringling animal trainers shock their elephants with electric prods and strike them with sharp steel-tipped bullhooks. The group says it plans to protest outside the Barclays Center as well.

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mayor Ernest Davis will host "Mount Vernon Night" from under the big top when the UniverSoul Circus comes to the city March 28.
The single ring circus was originally formed to inspire African American audiences, but has evolved to become a culturally diverse group of performers from around the globe.
Several months ago, organizers of the circus met with Davis to discuss working with the city, offering the mayor the opportunity to host a night for residents to get together for a family event.
The circus combines arts, theater and music to create an interactive environment for both children and adults. It is the first Black circus since the 1800s.
“This circus reminds me of Mount Vernon, culturally diverse and filled with talent,” Davis said. “When I was approached about the idea, I immediately signed on. Like Mount Vernon, this circus is a place where the pulse of the community beats.”
This year’s UniverSoul production features several new acts from around the world. There is a neck-breaking head balancing act from Vietnam, a Capella vocalists from Atlanta and performances from nearly a dozen countries.
“The UniverSoul Circus is a circus where soul is not a color,” Davis said. “It’s an experience that Mount Vernon residents won’t soon forget.”
Tickets can be purchased online, with prices ranging from $25 to $35 per person. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the circus campground on 149th Street and Exterior Street in the Bronx.

For centuries, the circus has entertained viewers around the world by pushing the limits and showcasing thrilling acts.
This year, when The Big Apple Circus erects its big top on City Hall Plaza for its annual Boston engagement, the focus will be different.
Of course, thrills and laughter will ensue. This year, however, the show will look to the roots of the circus. “Legendarium” explores, you guessed it, the legends of circuses past, while keeping up the excitement and world-class acts for which The Big Apple is known.
“We’re going to set the tone of how things started,” said Ringmaster John Kennedy Kane. “But this is in no way a history lesson. It’s full of fun facts and great acts.”

RM. JOHN KENNEDY KANE
Kane participated in one of the greatest circus legends himself when he ran away with the show more than 30 years ago. Since then, he has been a concessionaire, a clown, a magician, and a fire-eater, to name just a few. This is Kane’s first year as the ringmaster at Big Apple, but he was thrilled to already have been asked back for next season.
“My job is to make people believe I am in charge, that I’m more important than I am,” Kane said. “The ringmaster is an actor.”

DUMBO — DUMBO lived up to its name with an "elephant dance party" at Pier 1 under the Brooklyn Bridge.
Clowns juggled, children cheered and unicyclists pedaled Wednesday morning to announce 23 upcoming Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus performances at the Barclays Center.
"Come one, come all," said Borough President Marty Markowitz. "Buy those tickets and welcome to the most extravagant show the human eye can behold."
But not everyone is happy about the greatest show on earth.
Animal rights activists used the opportunity to voice their concerns over the way Ringling Bros. allegedly treats its elephants.
"Ringling Bros. beats and abuses baby elephants to train them," claimed PETA activist Ashley Byrne. "We hope families will choose to do something else that is fun and cruelty-free."
Ringling Bros. website states "training methods are based on reinforcement in the form of food rewards and words of praise. Verbal or physical abuse and the withholding of food or water are strictly prohibited."
The website also guarantees that Ringling Bros. abides by all state and local animal cruelty laws.
But Byrne, who said there is video proof of Ringling Bros. employees beating elephants with bull hooks, was determined to protest the circus.
Ringling Bros. spokesman Stephen Payne denied the claims of abuse saying that employees are using a training tool called a "guide" in the video and since then elephants have been seen by more than 60 veternarians who found them to be "healthy and well."
Kids from P.S. 287 in Fort Greene also turned up to see the show. Their eyes lit with excitement as they waved circus flags and waited for the elephants to perform.
"Children love animals and they adore elephants," Byrne said. "If they saw how they were treated they would run away kicking and screaming."
Circus ticket prices range from $30 to $194 and shows run through April 1.
