SPECIAL TO THE RECORD
Almost every year, it seems that someone is pronouncing the death of Coney Island. "This is the year that Coney Island is being reborn," said Dick Zigun, the unofficial mayor of Coney Island and founder of Coney Island USA, a non-profit arts organization.
"The new Luna Park is amazing," said Zigun. "We've had crowds like we haven't seen in 10 years. The best thing is that they've built a modern version of the old Luna Park, which is spectacular.
It's this huge, impressive light show, but it's also retro Coney Island history — an icon of the past returned."
In addition to the new amusement park, which opened on Memorial Day weekend, popular favorites like Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs, Ruby's Old Tyme Bar and the iconic red Parachute jump remain. Here's a rundown of what's going on this summer.
