A CIRCUS that is performing under the big top in Bayswater has come under fire for the conditions the animals are living in.
Lennon Bros Circus, which promotes itself as Australia's largest animal circus, has been set up at the corner of Canterbury and Dorset roads since May 24 and is due to leave town this Sunday.
A protest organised by Justice for Australian Circus Animals was held at the site of the circus last Saturday week with up to 30 people attending.
Activist Wesley Morgan said the group was aiming to raise awareness of the unhygienic conditions the animals were living in. A picture circulating on the internet shows the lion's cage full of mud after heavy rain, and Mr Morgan said those conditions were not acceptable.
Boronia resident Helen Marks was not able to attend the protest but has been making her voice heard through social media and at her workplace - Pets Haven.
"Everything you see in the photo is wrong - the animals are just left in these conditions with no shelters and out in the elements," she said.
Ms Marks said an increasing number of the public were not impressed with animals being used in circuses. The website for the Lennon Bros Circus said there were lions, horses, monkeys, camels, llamas, geese and dogs performing in their shows.
"There are other circuses these days that are far more modern in their thinking, like Cirque du Soleil, and that's what we should go see," Ms Marks said.

Mud pit: Protesters aren't happy with the "unhygienic" conditions the lions are living in.Both activists also said the way the animals travel between shows was "unnatural".
"They're transported around Australia in a cage. Imagine how long they're in a cage for when they're crossing the Nullarbor," Mr Morgan said.
Lennon Bros Circus did not respond to the Weekly's calls before deadline.
