CIRCUS fun is coming to this weekend's North Coast National with performers from Australia's oldest circus, Ashtons, set to thrill the crowds.
Clown, Gary "The Great" Ashton told The Northern Star Ashtons circus is the oldest circus in the English speaking world which started in Australia in 1852.
"My wife's great great grandfather's, grandfather James Ashton started the circus and it has passed on over the years through six generations to where it is today," he said.
Mr Ashton said hailing from a family of performers was how he met his wife Lorraine.
"Mum was a wire walker and dad was a musician and they did juggling and circus work and we joined Ashtons in Melbourne in 1952."
"A couple of years later when I was living in Sydney they were short of an act so I went and performed in the show."
"Then Lorraine and I married in 1959 and we have been with the circus ever since."
Proving the circus is a real family affair, Gary and Lorraine raised their three daughters and son while on the road with Ashtons across Australia.
"All of my children and grand children have all been circus performers at one time or another."
Mr Ashton said what he loved about the circus was to perform for the crowds and hear their applause.
"We have worked in different countries and been all around Australia with the circus."
"You have to like doing it because it's a hard life; you are travelling all the time in all sorts of weather."
At the weekends North Coast National performers from Ashtons Circus will treat the crowds to a circus program with aerialists, clowns, juggling, whip cracking, the space wheel and lots of comedy.
