Trapeze act, doggies new at Western Carolina fair

The Western Carolina State Fair is known for its entertaining shows, and this year it has a few new things in store for its 10-day run Oct. 18-27.
When was the last time you saw a good trapeze act? If you didn’t make it to the circus, now is your chance. The High Flying Pages have performed all over the world and were award winners in England and Monte Carlo. They will bring their third- and fourth-generation family act to Aiken, said marketing director Doug Wolf.
Also new this year are the Doggies of the Wild West. These puppies are all dressed up in western wear and perform all kinds of tricks.
Brian Ackley, the owner of Ackmonster’s Chainsaw Art, will use his chainsaw to turn large chunks of wood into works of art.
“The various objects he carves will be going up for auction at 4 p.m. Saturday,” Wolf said.
All of the shows will run twice daily during the week and three times each day on the weekends.
The USCA Pro Rodeo is back this year, presented by the University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team. It will feature bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing.
The rodeo will kick off the fair at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, and Friday, Oct. 19. Spectators can enter “The Carolina Outdoors Bull Chip Throw” each night for a chance to win a golf cart.
The ever-popular Stoney Roberts Demolition Derby will also be back. The derby has been a fan favorite for nearly 10 years. It will be in the Bridgestone Arena at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 and 27.
All shows are included with fair admission.

“People should check the fair schedule, because we are going to have some specials this year, but we’re not announcing them yet,” Wolf said. “They’ll need to check back daily on the fair schedule.”
A Mega Pass – which includes admission and all rides for one day – is $25 and only available for advance purchase. Patrons can buy a Magic Pass at the gate. It costs $30 and patrons can ride all rides for free. The Magic Pass does not include the $5 admission price.
Wolf said marketers really want people using the Web site more this year. In addition to announcing specials and shows there, viewers can see all the fun going on at the fair via the Let’s Ride Cam, available on the home page.
Wolf said there will be one big special during the fair, but he would not say what it is. He encourages patrons to check the site often.
“It’s going to be a good deal,” he said.
