STATEWIDE -- The state is cracking down on amusement rides this holiday weekend. The New York Department of Labor said it's monitoring 49 different carnivals and fairs, making sure they're safe.
The department is responsible for monitoring all rides at the state's 12 amusement parks, as well as any traveling shows outside New York City.
It said it inspects all fixed rides at least once a year and rides at traveling carnivals and fairs every time they move to a new location.
The department inspected more than 1,500 venues and more than 9,700 rides last year.
