REDLANDS >> The circus came to town Friday afternoon, as performers from Circus Vargas put on a 15-minute showcase outside of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Redlands’ Hansberger Clubhouse.

Show host Jon Weiss, clown Alex Acero, juggler Jeremy Garcia, hand balancer Hayley Kent and master gaucho Hilario Cabral drew cheers on the basketball court.

“The kids were excited,” said Janice Jackson, a BGC site director. “They had been waiting for it all day.”

Circus Vargas’ “Magikaria!” is in the Inland Empire for performances this weekend in San Bernardino, and later in Ontario and Chino.

The “big top” is currently taking up residence off the 10 Freeway at Waterman Avenue in San Bernardino through Monday before moving on to Ontario Mills on March 27 through April 7, and later the Chino County Fairgrounds April 10-14.

“This was just a taste of the show. What you have seen is just a small portion and most performers have multiple skills,” said Weiss of Long Island, N.Y. “The circus is an American tradition. And it’s more than just a job because it becomes a lifestyle.”

For many Boys and Girls Club youth, Friday’s performance was the first time they had ever seen anything like it. It was a nice gesture on Vargas’ part to present an opportunity for them to see it locally, Jackson said, adding that who knows what avenues it could lead to in the future for BGC members.

“It was just exciting to see them experience it. Nice for them to get a taste of it,” she said. “We have a lot who could easily be part of that environment.”
