CIRCUS TO MEET MORE PROTEST (NEWFOUNDLAND)

CORNER BROOK, GARY KEAN The Western Star 10/06/10
The circus is coming to town, but some Corner Brook residents won’t be extending a warm welcome to the show.
Cirque Estival has already experienced opposition to its events involving live exotic animals and has had forego visiting some venues in Newfoundland and Labrador this year.
The show scheduled for the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook on June 19 is still a go, as are shows in Stephenville June 17 and Deer Lake June 18.
Nola Roberts of Corner Brook is among a group of residents from the local area who intend to hold a protest outside the stadium when the circus comes to Corner Brook.“This will be a protest against animal cruelty, especially animals in the circus,” Roberts said. “Anyone who is interested can join us.”
There were more than 1,200 people registered in a Facebook group “Boycott the Cirque Estival in NL” as of Wednesday, while Roberts said there were 173 members in a group dedicated to the Corner Brook protest, “Boycott Corner Brook Circus June 19 2010.”
“Most of them are from the local area,” said Roberts.
With the circus scheduled to start at 7 p.m., the protest has been set to commence around 6 p.m.
The day before, interested protesters will be gathering at Roberts’ home to prepare banners, signs and T-shirts for the protest. She can be contacted through the Facebook group.
Some municipalities, including St. John’s and Grand Falls-Windsor, have prohibited the circus from coming to their towns. Others, including Marystown and Gander, are permitting the show to go on but have recently introduced by-laws which will ban circuses involving live animals for human entertainment in the future.
On its website, Cirque Estival has a section dedicated to its commitment to treating its animal performers ethically.
The Quebec-based circus tours with animals throughout Eastern Canada for 10 weeks of the year and all of its animals and trainers come from the Bowmanville Zoo in Ontario. That zoo is a member of the Canadian Association of Zoos, a not-for-profit service which the website says enforces international standards and ensures proper care for the animals.
“You can be assured that our animals are scrupulously cared for by the Bowmanville Zoo veterinarian,” the site says.
“Before touring, our veterinarian gives us an up-to-date health report, as well as a list of various accredited veterinarians on our tour route, in case of disease or ill-being that may occur to the animals.”
Cirque Estival is the same company which had one of its trucks carrying animals involved in an accident on the Northern Peninsula in 2008.
The animals — an elephant and two camels — were not seriously hurt in the mishap and became quite an attraction as they spent two days stranded in Daniel’s Harbour awaiting another vehicle to come pick them up.
In return for the town’s generosity, the circus donated $4,000 toward the cost of a new playground the town was planning.

Circus star set to stun crowds
Alyssa Kimlin 11th June 2010
CONTORTIONIST Brenda Gonzalez will be wowing Toowoomba residents when the Lennon Bros Circus starts tonight.
The 23-year-old performer has been contorting herself on stage in her native Chile since she was seven and joined the circus troupe with her partner Luis Quiroz in February.

Mr Quiroz does a bouncing rope act on the high wire and a hand-balancing act.
Jay Lennon, of Lennon Bros, said the circus always tried to have new acts in its shows.
“We try and change our show, just so we don’t have the same show all the time,” Mr Lennon said.
“We are a circus for the young and old.
“Seeing circuses is coming back in a big way, we are seeing more and more in the audience.”

CUMMERFORD PLAYS MILLERTON, NY LIONS CLUB CARNIVAL

Millerton Lions Club carnival starts 6-10-10

By CORY ALLYN - Staff Reporter
June, 10, 2010

MILLERTON — For the next four days, Eddie Collins Field will teem with activity, part of the first ever Millerton Lions Club Carnival.
In prior years, the Lions Club held an annual circus, but last year’s event was replaced by a silent auction and barbecue (that event, held in the fall, will continue). The carnival replaces the circus.
From June 10 through June 13, R.W. Commerford & Sons, of Goshen, Conn., will set up more than a dozen rides and a petting zoo, including animal rides with ponies and camels and traditional circus amenities such as popcorn and cotton candy.
Some not-for-profit organizations in the area will set up food tents. The Millerton Fire Department, American Legion Post 178 and the Sunday in the Country Food Drive will all have a helping hand in serving hamburgers, hot dogs and french fries, the proceeds from which will benefit those groups.
Admission to the event is free, but unlimited ride wrist bands will cost $20 (single ride tickets will also be sold). Thursday and Sunday coupons can be purchased for $5 off the wrist band prices at local businesses in the village. A percentage of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Lions Club to benefit its general administration fund.
Parking will be clearly marked along Eddie Collins Field, which is north of the village on Route 22.
“We just hope people come in, sit down and enjoy themselves and the sights and sounds of the carnival,” said Sarah Hermans, third vice president of the Lions Club.
The carnival will run from 5 to 10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

SABU TAKES ANOTHER WALK!

Swiss Travelling Circus Elephant Sabu Stages Her Second Getaway
June 10, 2010
By Paul Verschuur
June 10 (Bloomberg) -- Switzerland’s elephant escape artist did it again. Sabu staged a second getaway in three days from her travelling circus, taking a dip in a stream before being hauled home behind a farm tractor.
The 26-year-old pachyderm, whose impromptu tour of Zurich on June 6 made international headlines, took advantage of Zirkus Knie’s move to Basel last night to briefly saunter away, circus spokesman Niklaus Leuenberger said in a telephone interview.
While it wasn’t clear how Sabu managed to flee her handlers again, she was re-captured without incident and is “fine,” Leuenberger said today. “Luckily, no one got hurt.”
Zirkus Knie’s website now highlights foreign media coverage of Sabu’s weekend wander about the Swiss financial capital. That escape featured a Lake Zurich swim and an amble past the upmarket Bahnhofstrasse shopping area before Sabu was captured.
The Swiss newspaper 20 Minuten showed a snapshot of Sabu being marched back last night trailing a tractor and surrounded by circus workers. Tomorrow’s opening show in Basel has already sold out, the circus said.

CONEY ISLAND'S SURF AVENUE

Mustafah Abdulaziz for The Wall Street Journal

Coney Island's Surf Avenue is drawing interest from commercial developers and amusement-park operators..For decades, many New Yorkers stayed as far away from Coney Island as possible. But that's starting to slowly change as plans to revitalize the decrepit area begin to unfold.
Coney Island, long dubbed the "people's playground," sprawled over nearly 60 acres along Brooklyn's Atlantic waterfront in 1910. After decades of decline, the area had shrunk by last summer to just three acres of active amusement attractions.
Now it's expanding again. Plans unveiled by the city and private developers in early 2009 call for a 27-acre district that Includes a 12-acre amusement park as well as other entertainment venues, parks, hotels and retail space.
While it's expected to take as long as 10 years before the redevelopment is completed, the first phase—the resurrection of Luna Park, a 3.1-acre amusement park with 19 new rides—is already drawing new visitors to the area since opening over Memorial Day weekend. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703302604575295054245631326.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

A SUMMER'S WORTH OF EVENTS AT CONEY ISLAND---

A summer's worth of events at Coney Island

Thursday, June 10, 2010 BY JENNIFER V. HUGHES The Record

SPECIAL TO THE RECORD

Almost every year, it seems that someone is pronouncing the death of Coney Island. "This is the year that Coney Island is being reborn," said Dick Zigun, the unofficial mayor of Coney Island and founder of Coney Island USA, a non-profit arts organization.

"The new Luna Park is amazing," said Zigun. "We've had crowds like we haven't seen in 10 years. The best thing is that they've built a modern version of the old Luna Park, which is spectacular.

It's this huge, impressive light show, but it's also retro Coney Island history — an icon of the past returned."

In addition to the new amusement park, which opened on Memorial Day weekend, popular favorites like Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs, Ruby's Old Tyme Bar and the iconic red Parachute jump remain. Here's a rundown of what's going on this summer.

A NICE LETTER---

Letter: ‘Awesome’ family activity
Posted Jun 11, 2010

I just wanted to say thank you to the Shriners and the Rockford Park District for the amazing circus June 4.
I was blown away by the affordability, cleanliness, organization and overall show we saw at the Indoor Sports Center.
This was my son’s first circus, and we have definitely started a family tradition.I recommend this to every family in the Rockford and surrounding area.
Concessions and memorabilia were the perfect price.

My son walked away with a shirt, vinyl lion, food, pony ride and a program guide for $20.

What a deal.
In these trying times, we need more awesome family activities like this. Thank you again.

OLD CIRCUS POSTER DISCOVERED---

An advertisement for the Forepaugh Circus was uncovered during a recent remodeling project at the Star Prairie Barbershop.

Remodeling project reveals vintage circus ad
By: Anna Holmquist, New Richmond News
An advertisement for the Forepaugh Circus was uncovered during a recent remodeling project at the Star Prairie Barbershop.

Though Val Dierks knew the renovation of his Star Prairie barbershop would be hectic, he didn’t expect it to be such a circus.

When the siding on the south side of the building was torn off, an old circus poster was uncovered. It was in full color.“The thing that struck me was how brilliant the colors were after all those years,” said Dierks.

The poster advertised the Forepaugh Circus, which operated from 1865 to 1890 under many names, including the Great Forepaugh Show and Forepaugh & the Wild West. In fact, Adam Forepaugh, the owner, has been credited with being the first circus to incorporate a “wild west show.”

Forepaugh’s show was famously corrupt, according to circusinamerica.org. He employed pickpockets and ran con games to make good money. His practices gave birth to the idea that circuses were corrupt.

Dierks remembers that his parents would always warn him to watch out for pickpockets at the circus. The poster clearly says “The Great Forepaugh Show” and shows horse-drawn carts and a covered wagon.

Since it is so old, the poster was not able to be removed. Instead, Dierks said, it is covered with one inch of styrofoam and siding. Those who want to see the poster would have to buy the building, but “it’s not for sale!” said Dierks with a laugh.

According to the summer 2010 issue of The Oxcart Chronicles, the barbershop building has a long history. Originally, the structure was located on the other side of the street in Star Prairie. In 1908, the owners dragged it across the road and the back became the front. Many barbers have owned and operated it since its construction, which was probably the late 19th century. For additional history on the barbershop, see the current issue of The Oxcart Chronicles or http://www.oxcartchronicles.com/.
