Life in the circus is a juggling act — perhaps nowhere more than offstage.
Ask Philippe Normand-Jenny, 24, an acrobat in the cast of "Traces" at the Union Square Theater. In the show, he tumbles, skateboards and gets catapulted off a seesaw, but that's nothing compared to the flights it takes to see his girlfriend, Carole Demers, another circus performer who works internationally.
However, until this weekend, thanks to a happy accident of scheduling, Carole, 32, was only blocks away, performing the Russian bar act in Cirque du Soleil's "Zarkana," which closed last night.
"We were so happy, because we're never in the same place like this," says Demers. "But sometimes it can just happen."
For these two, a date night usually involves a day off and a red-eye flight. When they say good night, it's most commonly over Skype.
But, it turns out, they'll always have Manhattan.
And they aren't the only ones.
Phil's "Traces" buddy Xia (Daqi) Zhengqi, 28, is married to Carole's "Zarkana" castmate Masha Terentieva, 24.
Daqi jumps through rings and juggles diabolos. Masha specializes in costumed characters, and does an aerial hoop act.
"For us, airports are like bus stops," Masha says of their typical travel schedule. "When they said, 'Oh, you're going to New York for the whole summer,' we were like ..." She whoops with delight.
Masha and Daqi had spent a year touring with Cirque du Soleil's "Dralion" before they became a couple. Then Daqi went back to his native China to await a visa, and Masha to Canada, where she has lived since she emigrated from Russia in 2000.Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/2011/10/09/2011-10-09_love_in_the_circus_two_traveling_acrobat_couples_go_through_hoops_to_be_together.html#ixzz1aHg1U694
