Mystery Lane Farm rescues 40 miniature horses: Kelly Carder, a trainer at Mystery Lane Farm in Thornville, explains proper horse health while showing off the miniature horses the farm rescued.
THORNVILLE, OHIO — The caretakers at Mystery Lane Farm took in a full farm of animals this week — including 40 miniature horses, some of which were in neglected condition — but they've been able to find homes for nearly all of them by Wednesday.
The animals were recovered from a farm on Hayes Road west of Ohio 37 in Union Township, south of Granville on Monday, whose owner committed suicide, said Kelly Carder, a trainer who works at Mystery Lane Farm, northeast of Thornville.
The family of the farm owner didn’t know how to take care of the animals, which in addition to the miniature horses included at least a dozen pigs, four rabbits, six goats and a rooster. Most of those animals had been placed with new owners as of Wednesday. Only five of the 40 miniature horses still needed homes, Carder said.
“People have been very caring and very supportive,” she said.
Some of the miniature horses were found to be in less-than-desirable condition, Carder said, although most were in fair condition. Only a handful needed special attention, and about 10 were underweight or needed their hooves trimmed, Carder said.
