RUNAWAY BALLOONS

Runaway balloons knock out power for blocks in downtown Newburgh

CITY OF NEWBURGH — A bunch of Mylar balloons floated into an electrical transformer, shorted the power-line connection and knocked out power for blocks in downtown Newburgh, authorities said.City firefighters responded about 10:40 a.m. Tuesday to the scene on Broadway near Fullerton Avenue. The balloons cut the power to 152 homes and businesses throughout the neighborhoods surrounding upper Broadway. Crews from Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. restored power by 12:30 p.m.dmurphy@th-record.com
