Clowning around with science
By KENNETH KNIGHT

It might look like fun and games, but clowns Todd and Timea Zimmerman are a force of nature when they perform in the three-ring circus.
Their performance demonstrates science in motion.
"Our new show is called 'Built to Amaze!' " Todd Zimmerman said, referring to the upcoming season of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. "We built our show on defying scientific laws, defying the law of gravity and utilizing the science of balance and centrifugal force."
The legendary circus kicks off its 2013 season with the debut of the new show at The Forum in downtown Tampa from Jan. 2 to Jan. 6.
Early this month, the couple, who live near Orlando, brought their interactive act to the Museum of Science and Industry to show how their concentration, dexterity, energy and timing are related to science.
"Today we get to be teaching clowns, talking about the hidden secrets of The Greatest Show on Earth," Timea Zimmerman said of the Dec. 8 seminars.
The museum at 4801 E. Fowler Ave. was an ideal setting for the one-day Science of the Circus event, organizers said. It caters to children and adults interested in learning about science-related concepts.
During two 45-minute performances in the first-floor lobby, the clowns, known only as Todd and Timea, dazzled small crowds with feats of balance, hand-eye coordination, concentration, energy, friction and resistance.
They persuaded children in the audience to participate.
