Weighing in at nearly 310 pounds, African Lion Safari’s first “all-Canadian” Asian elephant was born on Aug. 2. Officials announced the arrival of baby Nellie on Thursday.
She is the 14th elephant to be born at African Lion Safari since 1991. Both of Nellie’s parents, including 19-year-old mother Natasha, were born at the park.
Patrons of the park, located southeast of Cambridge at 1386 Cooper St., can meet Nellie and her mother during each of the Elephant Round Up performances this fall (weather permitting).
According to a news release, African Lion Safari is home to the largest Asian elephant herd in any zoological facility in North America and has the most second-generation births of Asian elephants.
