Those who enjoyed the sights and sounds of Circus Vidbel last summer need not wonder whether it will return this year — the Kiwanis Club received a temporary permit to hold the fund-raising event on July 1, 2 and 3 at Saxe Middle School
Kathleen Holland of the Kiwanis Club told the Planning & Zoning Commission the event was a huge success last year, and that they exceeded fund-raising expectations. The event is sponsored jointly by the Kiwanis Club and the YMCA of New Canaan. About 3,000 people attended four performances over two days on the fields at the school last summer. After receiving about $11,000 in sponsorships and receiving about $44,000 from sales at the circus, the club and YMCA made about $25,000 after expenses. The money was split between the two, supporting YMCA’s youth programs and the Kiwanis Club’s scholarship programs, with $5,000 donated to the Outback Teen Center for a new recording studio.
Assistant Director of Public Works Tiger Mann, First Selectman Jeb Walker, local attorney and town resident Sperry DeCew, and YMCA board member Stan Sokolowski served as last year’s emcees.
Holland said that the event’s costs have risen this year, and that sponsorships would once again be sought.
Circus Vidbel, a one-ring, old-fashioned circus, has been performing across the United States for more than 20 years. Performances under the big top tent include Susan Vidbel in an aerial cloud swing display, an aerial hoop performance, dog and horse acts, an African acrobatic troupe, and jugglers.
