Popovich gives animals a new life, in the spotlight

Lots of performers have a post-show routine that includes going out until the wee hours for a bite to eat, maybe a libation or six, and some music to unwind to.

But the performers in Gregory Popovich's long-running Las Vegas show are a little different. The first thing on their apres-show agenda is a nice run in the backyard
"They relax," says Popovich of the dozens of animals who put the bark and meow (and more) into the Popovich Comedy Pet Theater. "They get back to their normal lives, and act like ordinary animals."

Veteran circus performer Gregory Popovich uses rescued shelter animals in his long-running Las Vegas show.
But the dogs, cats, parrots, geese and occasional other animals in Popovich's show, which sets up beds and litter boxes at the Admiral Theatre for a pair of Dec. 8 performances, are anything but ordinary.

That's not to say they're the kind of born-into-show-biz, trained since they were weaned critters you might expect. In fact, all the performers in the Popovich Comedy Pet Theater are rescue animals, plucked out of shelters around the country, taken to their forever home at the Popovich residence, and are integrated into the show, getting a chance to show off their natural talents.
