The Sauk County Board will decide Tuesday whether to oppose a proposed state takeover of Circus World Museum in Baraboo.
Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed $68 billion two-year spending plan would absorb Circus World into the Wisconsin Historical Society. That would end a longtime public-private partnership between the two organizations, which have been at odds since Walker’s plans were announced.
A resolution approved by the county board’s Finance Committee opposes that change. It encourages state lawmakers to keep Circus World a privately owned site while also providing annual funding.
Historical Society supporters say the museum is in financial trouble and could benefit from a closer relationship with the state organization. Local supporters of the museum say its finances have been misrepresented to the governor in order to encourage the takeover, which they say would alienate donors.
