Cavalia’s extended stay highlights circus-show popularity
from BIV Business Today
Vancouverites’ passion for circus-style shows has prompted travelling theatre company Cavalia to extend its stay at the Olympic Village and add a fourth week of performances. The troupe has sold nearly 30,000 tickets to the show, which opens March 22 and runs until April 17. That’s twice as many as it had sold earlier this month when the Montreal-based group first extended its stay.
Big-top circus troupe Cirque du Soleil performed its Kooza show to sold-out audiences last summer at a temporary venue in northeast False Creek.
It returned earlier this month to perform Quidam at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena and has future dates set for its Dralion show in Penticton, Abbotsford and Victoria.
Cirque du Soleil will next be in Vancouver in November when it brings a Michael Jackson show to Rogers Arena.
Cavalia was launched by Cirque du Soleil co-founder Normand Latourelle. While both shows offer circus-style entertainment, Circue du Soleil does not have animals in its performances, whereas Cavalia has about 55 horses that perform along with dozens of handlers.
Cavalia has toured the world and has been seen by 2.5 million people.
Cirque du Soleil generates about $1 billion in annual revenue
