RICHMOND, Va. --
You can almost taste the corn dogs.
The State Fair of Virginia opened Friday with all of the prize-winning pies, thrill rides, concerts, games, animals, derby cars and insanely large pumpkins you can fit into 10 days.
You can ride the Ferris wheel and learn to milk a cow. You might even learn a thing or two about Virginia's farmlands – from its peanuts to Christmas trees.
Greg Hicks, vice president of communications for the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation, said this year's state fair is shaping up to be a good one.
The Farm Bureau and Tennessee-based Universal Fairs make up Commonwealth Fairs and Events, which now owns and operates the fair.
The familiar sights will be there but so will some new things.
For an event that remains heavily rooted in its agricultural beginnings, one of the highlights is a virtual tour of six Virginia farms: a beef cattle farm in Rockbridge County; a Hanover County dairy farm; an Eastern Shore vegetable farm; a Cumberland County poultry operation; a Spotsylvania County produce farm; and a pork producer in Buckingham County.
