JOHANNESBURG - Rights group Activists for Animals Africa vowed to continue its fight against alleged animal cruelty by the Brian Boswell circus.
Scores of people protested outside the circus tents in Kempton Park on Sunday demanding that animals be completely banned from circuses.
The protest follows a Carte Blanche exposé on the treatment of elephants.
Activists said the battle against animal abuse in circuses was far from over.
The group said the televised incident was not an isolated one and using animals in circuses is inhumane.
One protestor came all the way from Durban to make her voice heard.
“It’s about time this country joined the rest of the world and started banning animals in circuses.”
Circus manager Georgina Boswell said the circus has followed all necessary procedures.
“We are regularly inspected by the SPCA and have never received a written or verbal warning from them.”
She also said while activists are entitled to their opinions, but intimidating visitors was borderline harassment.
