New circus isn't so new. It has been around since the 1960s. But about a decade ago, the idea was still new to Prague. Letní Letná has been bringing international and local acts together under various tents since 2004. For those still unfamiliar with new or contemporary circus, it is based on drama, acrobatics and other mystifying feats, without the use of animals or traditional clowns doing standard jokes viewers have seen hundreds of times before. Most, but not all, shows are family-friendly. Over the years, street theater and workshops have also fallen under the festival's umbrella.
"Visitors can look forward to an exceptional program," festival organizer Jiří Turek said at a press conference. You can sample the program for free on the opening Sunday, Aug. 18, at 9 p.m., when many of the Czech-based acts will appear together for the festive festival opening. "And as the cherry on the cake, members of foreign groups that are already present such as Les Colporteurs and others will join in as guests," Turek said.
Les Colporteurs have been at the festival before and are one of the headline acts. They will be presenting "Le bal des intouchables," which follows the exploits of eight people with different levels of physical ability. It is a bit of a different type of circus show, as it does touch on social issues.
