Circus no show in Greenfield, elsewhere in area

GREENFIELD — The show did not go on Sunday, as would-be circus visitors were met with a barred gateway, no-trespassing signs and a printed notice that all shows of the Piccadilly Circus had been canceled.
Drivers with children occasionally pulled up, read the notice and left or stopped in the street, stared at the wire and sawhorse across the fairground gateway and departed.
Lance Gauthier of Shelburne Falls said he stopped by for an earlier show time. “If you’ve got a carload of kids and you’re at the gate and there’s no circus and you’ve been talking it up all week and you have free tickets in your pocket, it’s bad,” Gauthier said.
The company did not announce the cancellations on its website or its listed social media accounts, but a call to the information number listed on the signs found a recorded message announcing the cancellation of shows in Adams on Saturday, the Sunday shows in Greenfield, and the shows in Pittsfield on Monday.
These three scheduled stops appear to have been all of the Florida company’s Massachusetts show dates.
The circus had distributed free children’s tickets through schools and elsewhere — two kids allowed free per paying adult, according to the website — and sold tickets online.
The sign at the gate prompted anyone with questions to call 941-330-3961. When that line connected to anything more than an echo, it was to a recorded message announcing the cancellations and telling those who purchased tickets online that they would be refunded.
There was no one from the Piccadilly Circus at the gate Sunday evening and no representatives of the company could be reached in person Sunday evening.
