The circus came to Duson Elementary School on Monday, but in this version, the students were the stars.
Circus of the Kids, a Florida-based education organization, visited the school and led workshops where students got to learn the art of juggling, one of the key parts of any circus act.
During the workshop, students used bright scarves — first one, then two and finally three — as Circus of the Kids owner/director Bruce Pfeffer demonstrated the cascade pattern and figure eights that are the keys to juggling with success. The activities are fun, but also designed to help students improve hand-eye coordination, persistence, concentration and self-confidence.
"This is a great experience for the kids," said Duson Elementary teacher Dustin Phillips, who helped bring Circus of the Kids to the school. "It's teaching them about having self-confidence, and it's great exposure for them because they are learning something different."
