What do a wheelbarrow, the compass, paper, silk cloth, porcelain and acrobatics have in common? They were all created in China and they're all featured in the Shanghai Circus. On Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 21 and 22, will return to Maui Arts & Cultural Center to perform three beautifully orchestrated shows in the Castle Theater.
During the Han Dynasty two millennia ago, Chinese farmers and craftsmen, having relatively little to do over the long winter, spent their time improving their positions on the social ladder by becoming acrobats.
They practiced the art form with just about anything they could find around their homes--even their own bodies.
Building on these traditional performances, artists of today's New Shanghai Circus add layers of complexity and daring feats with new techniques and spectacular stunts.
The shows begin at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Monday, and at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Adult tickets are $12, $22 and $28, and $11, $12 and $14 for kids 12 years and under, plus applicable fees.
