SARASOTA - Plans are under way and preparations are being made for Nik Wallenda's tightrope walk over the Sarasota bayfront Tuesday. And if you can't make it downtown to see it in person, ABC 7 has you covered.
Wallenda received approval from the city of Sarasota last Tuesday to perform his tightrope act. The Sarasota native plans to begin his walk from a crane that will be set up near the Unconditional Surrender statue along the Sarasota bayfront.
Then at 11am he will walk across a wire strung over U.S. 41 to the Marina Tower condo on Gulfstream Avenue.
ABC 7 will be airing the entire event live, as well as streaming it here on MySuncoast.com.
Due to a public safety perimeter around the event, public parking near the bayfront will be limited. Spectators are encouraged to walk to the event or park their vehicles in the Palm Avenue Garage. A free trolley also will shuttle spectators round-trip from the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall parking lot, with a drop-off at the intersection of Cocoanut Avenue and Gulfstream Avenue. The trolley will run from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
The section of U.S. 41 under the event and some nearby side streets will be closed to traffic beginning at 10:45am. See the attached map for details.
Circus Sarasota is a proud sponsor of the event. It is investing $15,000 in production costs for the event as a way to contribute to the world famous circus legacy in the Sarasota community. Preservation of the circus arts is part of Circus Sarasota’s year round community outreach program.
Nik Wallenda is currently performing in Circus Sarasota's Winter Performance.
